Interview

1. What was the most important thing you learned while writing There Once Were Stars?

Patience. I can’t stress the importance of this. Publishing is a long, painstaking process. Take your time on everything from finishing edits, to choosing a publisher/agent, to getting ready for marketing. Once your book is out there, there’s no taking it back.

2. What is a song that you think represents the main character, Natalie?

One Girl Revolution – Superchick

3. How many drafts were there for There Once Were Stars?

Three before the publisher, and then four once it got into editing.

4. What is your favorite word?

Metamorphosis.

5. What is your favorite food to eat while writing?

Garden peas. I get obsessed with shelling them, and eat them like candy!

6. Who would you want to cast as Natalie if There Once Were Stars became a movie?

Natalia would be played awesome by Olivia Cooke. I loved her in Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl. She’d show Nat’s innocence and naivety, while surprising us with her strengths as the book goes on.

7. What is the best book you’ve read in 2016, so far?

I loved We Were Liars, but am obsessed with The Vanishing Girls by Lauren Oliver. They’ve inspired me to try a YA mystery!

8. What are three adjectives to describe There Once Were Stars?

Naïve. Obsession. Change.

About Melanie McFarlane

MelanieMelanie McFarlane is a passionate writer of other-wordly adventures, a little excitable, and a little quirky. Whether it’s uncovering the corruption of the future, or traveling to other worlds to save the universe, she jumps in with both hands on her keyboard. Though she can be found obsessing over zombies and orcs from time to time, Melanie focuses her powers on writing young adult stories to keep the rest of the world up reading all night.

She lives with her husband and two daughters in the Land of Living Skies.

  1. Another interesting post, Sophie! You are not just a voracious reader and excellent writer, but also a good interviewer. And Melanie’s advice about patience is true about anything that’s worth doing. Remind me of that when I get frustrated learning to code, OK? 🙂
